ISLAMABAD, August 24, SPA—Pakistan’s defence exports increased to more than $40 million in 2006-07 and France, Germany, South Korea, Turkey and other countries have offered joint ventures to manufacture and market small arms and ammunition, a news report said.
“The industry is also meeting domestic requirements of sophisticated arms and ammunition,” the Chairman of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories, Wah, near Islamabad, Lt-Gen Syed Sabahat Hussain told leading English language daily Dawn.

In contrast with other Mectron Engenharia missiles, such as the MAA-1 SRAAM or the forthcoming A-Darter partnership, Mectron appears to be working hard to avoid publicity for the MAR-1. The firm would not even acknowledge the missile’s existence for many years, and details remain sketchy. Pictures like this one show a MAR-1 that appears to be similar in size to counterparts like Raytheon’s AGM-88 HARM, with a reported range of 25 km when launched from an altitude of about 33,000 feet/ 10 km. Testing appears to have ended, and it will equip Brazil’s upgraded AMX and F-5BR aircraft once it is accepted into service.

The recent massacre perpetrated in Mumbai, India has complicated Brazil’s approval announcement. As attention is drawn to the role Pakistan’s intelligence agency has played in this and other attacks, Brazil’s Defense Minister Nelson Jobim has been forced to respond : “Brazil negotiates with Pakistan, not with Pakistani terrorists… To cancel this deal would be to attribute terrorist activities to the Pakistani government.”

Lt General Sabahat Hussain in an exclusive interview with Pakistan Observer said the POF has developed Vision 2020 to conceive futuristic projects. The vision includes a system integrator and a hub of Research and Development. The vision will also include fully developed Human Resource Management System. As a first step in that direction, POF has started joint venture with Poongsan Company of South Korea. Agreements have been signed with Nexter of France, Pretis of Bosnia and Argentoil of Argentina for co-production in POF. The POF has also cooperative arrangements with world class companies of other advanced countries including Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and South Africa for joint productions.
