@Fred. Thank you for your observations. As for the soldiers of WW1 and WW2, no they surely did not come out of self-interest, they were drafted. Did America act of out self-interest ? Probably, but this is not a crime, it is wise if you wish to preserve a balance.

As for having to believe in God to express charity and other virtues, of course it is not a requirement ! I have friends who are atheists who are principled and compassionate, more so then many church goers.

But the vehement ridicule that French observers pile on those Americans of faith is repugnant to me. I am unable to comprehend how France became Godless ? Shall we go back to Humanism, and the emphasis on Man, as opposed to God, controlling our destiny ?

It is a delicate question which theologians and philosophers spend their lives debating.

If one does not believe in God, then what is the point in life ? To acquire endless material possessions ? To whom may one turn in moments of tremendous pain and anguish ?

Shall children be raised in a moral vacuum ?

Thanks Fred for your gentle, reasoned reponse.
